Bring on the summer vacations! I’m super excited for all the family and relaxation time I have coming over the next few weeks. I make a pack list to keep me (and my kids) focused and organized. (That way, everyone can pack their own suitcase and I know it’s going to include everything they need!) In addition to all the usual clothing and toiletries, I also include some specific healthy foods to pack when traveling. That way I know for sure I will have something to eat on the plane, for breakfast and during excursions.

Staying plant-based while traveling isn’t as hard as many people think. With a little planning, it’s actually simple. I always check out restaurants in the area ahead of time and make a plan for where to eat. With my crew of 5, we usually stay at a timeshare or VRBO so breakfasts and lunches are usually handled in our “rented” kitchen or at the hotel. I scope out the grocery stores to size up the situation. I also do some recon for health stores in the area to make sure I can buy some green juices for the morning.

Breakfast is typically the toughest meal for me while away since I am the only vegan in my family. Since we usually eat breakfast in or at the hotel restaurant, I always pack a few things to make sure I’m covered. Below are a few of my favorite healthy foods to pack when traveling.

1. Hemp Hearts

I never leave home without these! I can always whip up a smoothie in the room or sprinkle these on a garden salad by the pool if the menu doesn’t have anything else to offer.

2. Justin’s Almond Butter Packs

These packs have saved me more than once when the breakfast buffet has nothing for a plant-based mama to eat. Spread on piece of whole wheat toast and topped with sliced bananas, I’ve got something tasty to fill the boiler at the top of the morning.

3. Instant Oatmeal Packs

I am not the biggest fan of oatmeal, but for travel, they are a must if I want to eat breakfast. I’ll pack a couple of these and can add fresh berries or fruit along with hot water while the rest of the family tackles the waffles and pancakes.

4. Trail Mix Packs

I love the travel mixes that Trader Joe’s offers. So many choices! These are great for the plane and excursions while on my trip.

5. Kind Nut Bars

Another great snack for the road, Kind bars are my go-to for the variety of vegan flavors they offer.
